Star Anise (Illicium verum): The Digestive and Antiviral Spice

Star Anis, Illicium verum, is the striking eight-pointed star-shaped fruit of a small Chinese tree, one of the most visually distinctive spices in the world and one with a significant place in both traditional Chinese medicine and modern pharmacology. The volatile oil’s primary compound (trans-anethole) gives it an anise-like flavour similar to Fennel and Anise, and shares much of their carminative character — but Star Anise carries an additional pharmacological claim to fame: it is the commercial source of shikimic acid, the primary raw material from which the antiviral drug oseltamivir (Tamiflu) is synthesised.

At Herba Naturalle, Star Anise is listed in the comprehensive herb index as a warming digestive and antiviral herb, complementary to the Digestive Reset Bundle and Elderflower Complex.

Active Compounds

  • Trans-anethole (75–90% of volatile oil), the primary active compound; carminative, antispasmodic, antifungal, antiviral, and phyto-oestrogenic
  • Shikimic acid: the compound that provided the original basis for Tamiflu synthesis; has antiviral activity in its own right
  • Flavonoids: quercetin and related compounds; antioxidant
  • Foeniculin: a phenylpropanoid contributing to the overall aromatic character

Clinical Applications

Digestive Carminative

The primary therapeutic application. Trans-anethole relaxes intestinal smooth muscle, relieving flatulence, bloating, colic, and intestinal spasm. Used for indigestion, infant colic (in very dilute preparations), and nausea. Complementary to the Berberis Plus.

Respiratory and Antiviral

The shikimic acid content provides antiviral activity relevant to influenza and other respiratory viruses. Used in Chinese medicine for coughs, bronchitis, and respiratory infections. The Lungwort Plus and Elderflower Complex provide complementary respiratory support.

Galactagogue

Trans-anethole has mild phyto-oestrogenic activity, contributing to mild lactation support, consistent with the traditional use of anise-family herbs for breastfeeding support.

Antimicrobial

Documented antifungal activity against Candida, relevant in gut dysbiosis protocols.
