Vasaka (Adhatoda vasaka): Ayurveda’s Premier Respiratory Herb
Vasaka — Adhatoda vasaka (also Justicia adhatoda) — is the most important respiratory herb in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Known in Sanskrit as Vasa and in Hindi as Adusa, this evergreen shrub native to the Indian subcontinent has been used continuously in Ayurvedic medicine for over 2,000 years for all manner of respiratory conditions — asthma, bronchitis, tuberculosis, and productive coughs. Its pharmacological significance in modern medicine is remarkable: the alkaloid vasicine isolated from Vasaka directly inspired the development of the pharmaceutical expectorant bromhexine (and its metabolite ambroxol), two of the most widely used cough medicines in the world.
At Herba Naturalle, Vasaka is listed in the comprehensive herb index as a specialist respiratory herb — complementary to the Lungwort Plus and aligned with Stop the Inflammation Pandemic: Breathe Easy.
Active Compounds
- Vasicine (peganine) — the primary quinazoline alkaloid; a potent expectorant, bronchodilator, and uterotonic; the direct inspiration for bromhexine synthesis
- Vasicinone — an oxidation product of vasicine; with bronchodilatory and respiratory anti-spasmodic activity
- Vasicol — with additional respiratory activity
- Essential oil — l-phytol and related compounds
- Tannins and flavonoids — anti-inflammatory contribution
Clinical Applications
Bronchitis and Productive Cough
The primary application. Vasicine and vasicinone combine expectorant action (stimulating mucociliary clearance and bronchial mucus production to loosen and facilitate expectoration) with bronchodilatory action (relaxing bronchial smooth muscle) — addressing both the congestion and the spasm of bronchitis simultaneously. The Smooth Muscle and Immune Reset Bundle addresses the underlying bronchial smooth muscle inflammation.
Asthma
The bronchodilatory vasicine provides antispasmodic relief in asthma — used alongside, not instead of, prescribed inhalers.
Respiratory Infections
Anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties support resolution of respiratory infections. Vasicine also has documented antiviral activity.
