Butcher’s Broom (Ruscus aculeatus): The Venous Tonic
By Anjela Jeganathan – Holistic Medical Herbalist | Herba Naturalle
Butcher’s Broom — Ruscus aculeatus — is a compact evergreen shrub native to Mediterranean Europe and widely found across Southern England. Its name derives from its historical use by butchers, who bound the stiff, spine-tipped “leaves” (technically flattened stems called cladodes) into brushes for sweeping their chopping blocks. In herbal medicine, however, Butcher’s Broom is valued for an entirely different kind of cleansing action — the improvement of venous tone and the reduction of the stagnation, oedema, and vascular insufficiency that affect millions of adults.
At Herba Naturalle, Butcher’s Broom is listed in the comprehensive herb index as one of the most evidence-supported herbs for venous conditions — a herb whose pharmacological record fully justifies its clinical reputation.
Active Compounds
- Steroidal saponins — ruscogenins (neoruscogenin and ruscogenin): directly stimulate contraction of the smooth muscle of vein walls, improving venous tone; reduce capillary permeability; inhibit enzymes that degrade the vascular wall matrix
- Flavonoids — hesperidin and rutin; with capillary-strengthening and anti-inflammatory effects
- Benzofurans — with additional vasoactive activity
Clinical Evidence
Butcher’s Broom has been the subject of multiple randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews for chronic venous insufficiency. Key findings include significant reductions in leg swelling (oedema), heaviness, cramping, and subjective discomfort compared to placebo. A Cochrane-reviewed meta-analysis found that ruscogenin preparations were superior to placebo for leg oedema in chronic venous insufficiency.
Clinical Applications
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
The primary and best-evidenced application. Ruscogenins directly tone the smooth muscle of vein walls — improving the valve function that prevents venous reflux, reducing the venous pooling that causes lower leg oedema, heaviness, and aching. The Smooth Muscle and Immune Reset Bundle targets the underlying smooth muscle inflammatory process.
Varicose Veins
By improving venous wall tone and reducing the incompetence of venous valves, Butcher’s Broom helps prevent the progression of varicose veins and reduces their associated symptoms.
Haemorrhoids
The venous-toning action is particularly relevant in haemorrhoids — engorged and prolapsed anorectal veins that reflect venous insufficiency in the pelvic circulation. Oral preparations and topical applications both have traditional and clinical use.
Oedema
By reducing capillary permeability and improving venous return, Butcher’s Broom reduces the peripheral oedema (ankle and leg swelling) associated with chronic venous insufficiency, long periods of standing, and sedentary work.
How to Use
- Standardised extract (7–11% ruscogenins): 150–300mg twice daily — the most evidence-backed form
- Tincture (1:3): 3–5ml three times daily
- Tea: 2–4g dried root/rhizome simmered 15 minutes; 2–3 cups daily
⚠ Safety Considerations
- Generally very well tolerated with an excellent safety record
- Pregnancy: Insufficient safety data — avoid therapeutic doses
- Hypertension: The vasoconstricting action may theoretically worsen hypertension — use with professional guidance in this context
- Alpha-blockers (prostate medication): Theoretical interaction — professional guidance recommended
