Marshmallow Leaf (Althaea officinalis folia): The Gentle Aerial Demulcent

Marshmallow Leaf — the above-ground leaves of Althaea officinalis — is distinct from the root preparation in both phytochemical emphasis and clinical application. While the root provides the most concentrated demulcent activity (and is used in the Marshmallow Root Plus formulation), the leaf offers a gentler, more flavonoid-rich preparation particularly suited to upper respiratory demulcent action and mild urinary soothing. Both are listed separately in the Herba Naturalle herb index.

Clinical Applications

Dry, Irritating Cough

The primary application of the leaf. The mucilaginous polysaccharides coat and soothe the irritated pharyngeal and bronchial mucosa, reducing the urge to cough and providing protective relief. The Lungwort Plus provides more comprehensive lower respiratory support.

Upper Respiratory Inflammation

Pharyngitis, laryngitis, and the irritated throat of colds and post-nasal drip — the leaf tea provides immediate soothing comfort. Relevant to Stop the Inflammation Pandemic: Breathe Easy.

Mild Urinary Irritation

The mild mucilaginous and anti-inflammatory effects extend to the urinary mucosa — complementing the Cornsilk Plus for soothing urinary inflammation.

How to Use

  • Cold maceration (best for mucilage): Steep 2–4g in cold water overnight; drink 2–3 cups daily — cold extraction preserves the mucilaginous polysaccharides best
  • Tea: 2–4g steeped 15 minutes in hot water; still effective
  • Gargle: Concentrated cooled tea for pharyngitis and laryngitis

Safety

  • Extremely safe
  • Medication absorption: Mucilage may slow the absorption of oral medications — take medications separately, 2 hours apart
