Welcome back to Stop the Inflammation Pandemic. I’m Anjela Jeganathan, Holistic Medical Herbalist.
In our previous post, we explored how inflammation in the male reproductive system can silently disrupt fertility, libido, and long-term vitality. Today, we shift our focus to a lesser-discussed, but crucial area of health — the surface nervous system, and how inflammation here could be quietly shaping your thoughts, feelings, and even your memory.
What Is the Surface Nervous System?
The surface nervous system is your interface with the world — the part of your body and mind that processes everyday stress, fear, thoughts, emotions, and responsibilities. It governs how you respond to your environment: your work, your relationships, your health, and your sense of self.
This is distinct from the deeper nervous system, which stores emotional wounds, generational trauma, and subconscious cellular memory — often buried deep in muscle and cell tissue.
Before we can heal those deeper wounds, we must first restore peace at the surface level.
How Inflammation Affects the Nervous System
Imagine an electrical wire — insulated by plastic. If that protective covering is damaged, the current flickers or short-circuits. This is exactly what happens when the myelin sheath — the protective layer of your nerves — becomes inflamed.
As inflammation takes hold:
- Nerve signals get distorted
- Your body reacts instead of responds
- You may feel anxious, hypersensitive, or mentally scattered
Occasional inflammation is manageable. But chronic inflammation can push the immune system to attack nerve linings, leading to:
- Memory lapses
- Cognitive decline
- Potential conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease
In short, when brain membranes are inflamed, the regions storing memory and function become “locked.” What begins as forgetfulness can become permanent loss if not addressed early.
Science is still unraveling this link — but your body already knows how to heal. We just need to listen.
Healing Starts from Within
Your body holds the intelligence to repair itself. But for healing to begin, we must quiet the surface noise — the anxiety, overthinking, and fear.
Once this layer is soothed, the body can begin to access and release deeper emotional wounds — including inherited trauma and mental conditioning. That’s when real transformation begins.
Case Story: Healing Beyond the Symptoms
A 20-year-old came to my clinic with severe anxiety and frequent bowel movements — up to 8 times a day.
His symptoms began at age 11, but intensified at 18 after a traumatic public accident involving loose bowels. Since then, he avoided going out, checked for toilets constantly, and lived in a cycle of fear.
All his medical tests came back normal. But his nervous system told a different story.
I recognized the pattern: his surface nervous system was inflamed, and his gut — deeply linked to nerve health — was overwhelmed.
My treatment focused on:
- Rebalancing his adrenal and nervous systems
- Calming gut inflammation (especially in the smooth muscle lining)
After 4 months, he was opening his bowels just 1–2 times a day. He regained confidence, started socializing again, and is now beginning an apprenticeship.
It wasn’t his stomach that was broken.
It was a memory of fear — trapped in his nervous system — that was triggering physical symptoms.
Herbal Support for the Surface Nervous System
When you’re struggling with daily stress, anxiety, or emotional overwhelm, herbal support can be powerful. One of my favourites:
Gotu Kola Complex — “Meditation in a Bottle”
This blend:
- Calms the nervous system for 3–4 hours
- Brings mental clarity and calm focus
- Helps you observe — rather than react to — your thoughts
- Softens fear-based thinking and overprocessing
When taken daily for 2–3 months, it nurtures long-term nervous system resilience, restoring your natural state of joy and clarity.
One Moment at a Time
Physical injuries take time to heal.
But emotional pain? That can dissolve in a moment — when we see it for what it is.
You’re not your thoughts. You’re not your trauma. You're not your fears.
Life happens one moment at a time. A kind act. A smile. A breath. A choice.
We don’t need to carry every experience with us. Only what is essential — the wisdom that guides us forward.
Final Thoughts
Your nervous system is the gateway to your entire well-being. When it’s calm and grounded, your body remembers how to heal. Your mind finds peace. And life begins to feel whole again.
In our next article, we’ll explore how inflammation impacts the smooth muscle lining of the cardiovascular system — and what you can do to protect your heart from the inside out.
Until then, breathe deeply. Stay present.
And take care of your beautiful, wise nervous system.
